Project Hyaline

Hyaline logo- two metal wings on either side of a decorative compass-like design, with a flower in the middle. A banner underneath it reads 'Hyaline'.
A world map, with several large continents. It has a border made of tree branches and vines wrapped around them.

The planet

Hyaline is a super-Earth that orbits a main sequence star. Its sky features rings comprised of rock and three moons that shepherd them. Life was born after the continents had already formed, segregating the very first fingerprints- extraordinary biodiversity evolved in its wake.

The planet is known among its inhabitants as many things- Nierio (Lune) or Kazauthi (Rriork-th) are but only two of them. In Lune, the rough translation is “Hyaline”, reflecting the Gukeur people’s preoccupation with the sky and ocean they are surrounded by.

The three moons are known as Amarh, Elun and zarel'k by the Gukeur people.

Hyaline has factions in place of countries, each of which is dedicated to one or a number of Kigi anek’oko - the ancient biomechanical entities that roam the planet. Roughly translated, their name means "the Diplomats."

The most catastrophic wars of Hyaline’s past have arisen from crimes committed by diplomats themselves. Those who are guilty of such acts are under the care of the one known as Oreun and their vault. It is for this reason they earned their status as diplomats.

Hyaline’s largest city- Arifeux - was built by colonisers from another world in an effort to seize power. Ziograu, they call themselves. They remain the governors of their golden city, but they are weak and dwindling in number. The language of Arifeux is Rriork-th.

Inside Arifeux's impressive walls are messages of equality, of unity, of safety. It is an insidious kind of violent. They do not kill those who choose to leave, they know the outside world they're sheltered from will do it for them. They treat everyone the same- there is no visible prejudice, just law-enforced erasure.

Hyaline’s lack of conventional order makes for a very varied world. It is one with very little dichotomies and a lot of nuanced conflict, one with a sense of unity that far extends geographic location.

Leader of the Gukeur people

A three-quarter birds eye view of a rainforest. There is a cliff with a river leading up to it that a creature is drinking from. Some of the trees have gigantic flowers.
Three bipedal creatures with horns on their snouts, large seashell-like ears, fluffy tails, and claws that look like hooves. They are covered in fur. On the left is a pleasant looking fat adventurer with brown fur, in the middle is a scrawny warrior with a mechanical leg and green fur, on the far right is a apprehensive looking citizen with brown fur and a medium build..

Art of an alien planet

Status: in progress

Art of an Alien Planet is an introduction to Hyaline and two of it's to-be child projects. It explores the world in detail through writing and illustration.

The focus is mainly on the Gukeur people and the portion of rainforest they are native to, Elinu lio'rohi. It will also briefly touch on Arifeux. These locations are the glue that hold the context of the world together.

The Gukeur are a group of Amiel people native to Elinu lio'ro, a region in the Falih'oko Elinneu rainforest. Roughly translated to "water's mouth" and "endless green", respectively. Their population is small, but steady. Their namesake is a word that translates to both "family" and "friend" in their native language, Lune.

They are egg laying simultaneous hermaphrodites that lactate. Raising children is a group-wide effort- they have buildings dedicated to communal egg sitting and their children are educated via assisting the adults in their professions.

Their ancestors worshipped the moon closest to Hyaline – named Elun - & its phases. As a result, the moons hold much symbolism to them, but especially that one. Their clothes are mostly red and gold to signify an affinity for Kol, embroidered with vine-like patterns and other motifs of nature. Ring symbols are used often, since Elun has frequent eclipses.

The inhabitants of Elinu lio'rohi are tamer than those beyond its borders. The Gukeur homes are closer to the ocean so that they are largely out of the way of the apex predators. Despite their dangerous and wild front yard, the Gukeur have taken it upon themselves to become the balance-keepers of the forest. They routinely survey the populations of animals and plants and are always sure to be careful of their hunting and gathering technique lest they throw the ecology off balance.

Ao’ze’ckr, the troublemaker

Status: on hold, preliminary work complete

Nails & Teeth follows the story of Amzarah who, after waking in an unknown location, has no recollection of who they are.

Their quest is to recover their past. Their mission is to answer their first recallable question:

The sky is red tonight.

The others, they are not worried.

Why is the sky red tonight?

Made with unity

Three brightly coloured plants. A flower with claw-like structures protruding from its middle, a glowing pink mushroom, and a bright red flower separated into quarters with a mouth-like appearance which is close to the ground with no stalk and has green leaves.
A monster with the build of a lean big cat, but is reptilian in appearance. Dark grey scale-like skin with bright red stripes. It has green eyes, a lot of needle-like teeth, and spikes and bones protruding from the back of its head serving as a protective mechanism. It has horns all up its long snout.
An underwater creature with a snout that points upwards and has interlocking teeth that sit external to its mouth when it is closed. It has large arms with flaps attached to them, two sets of fins, and a long tail with a fin on the end. It has four eyes. It is purple and blue.

Status: on hold and last in line

You are a Gukeur biologist tasked with assessing the health of your rainforest home, and your goal is to survive by learning about the world around you. On one condition: you help the world survive, too. It has a heavy focus on environmentalism with violence not being the only answer, and its aim is to cultivate awareness of how our actions impact everything around us. It is part survival, part narrative and part exploration.

Thank you to Katelyn, Max & Aaron for patiently standing by as I work on the world guide, the idea of which arised once asked for more context so they could work more effectively on the world with me.

I don't know where we'll all be when I'm ready to begin work on it— it has been many years. But the idea would not have been conceivable if not for these three wonderful people in the first place.

additional information

Hyaline's game is set just before the events of the graphic novel, and Art of an Alien Planet contains two short stories that detail the beginning events of both these narratives. I work on the world guide and graphic novel in conjunction with one another, but the world guide will be finished first— it is, essentially, an extravagant proof of concept for the game.

I maintain a patreon page for all things Hyaline, a couple of dollars a month helps buy me the time to work on it! I also have a tip jar for those who wish to send a one-off payment.

Thanks for reading! ❤︎
